A United Way to Give Thanks

November 25, 2013

With Thanksgiving Day approaching, all of us at United Way are reminded of the generosity and compassion that are hallmarks of this regional community.

This personal investment is what distinguishes our region on a national level. Our community doesn’t just throw money at problems; it extends a hand to those in need and says, “Let me help.”I’m fortunate enough to see evidence of this every day.

For example, generous contributors have raised about three-quarters of the $14.5 million goal for this year’s campaign. Leading corporate contributors to date include Kellogg Co. ($3.2 million), Stryker Corp. ($1.375 million) and Pfizer Inc. ($1.35 million). Meanwhile, a number of other firms posted double-digit increases, among them Abraxas, Approved Protection Systems, Employment Group, and Schupan & Sons. Also achieving strong campaigns were Harper Creek Community Schools, Pennfield Schools, Family & Children’s Services and many others.

On top of financial support, volunteers continue to donate their time and talents for United Way Day of Caring service projects. To date, 2,300 volunteers have participated in Day of Caring activities throughout the region.

Further, I can point to countless stories of how the work of United Way and our community partners continue to change lives. You’ll find some of those stories right here on our website.

We’re grateful for the continued support, both financial and personal, to advance the common good for all. Support for our campaign is especially important at this time. These contributions create opportunities for people to succeed through a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family through retirement, and good health.

By bringing together every person, every volunteer project and every dollar given, we transform people’s lives and the community as a whole.

And that’s something we can all be thankful for.
