“VOLUNTEERING HAS CHANGED MY STORY.”
When Things Fell Apart
My life was going along wonderfully. I was married to an active, fun-loving man who was full of life. I was just enjoying the ride, looking forward to our future—growing old together, continuing our adventures. And then he died. I was alone. No matter how much time went by—a year, three years, five years—I just felt lost. Then I read a book about finding a purpose in life, and it sparked a desire to discover mine.
Learning to Rebuild
I saw an ad in the newspaper for classes to prepare people for an upcoming project with Kalamazoo Valley Habitat for Humanity. My son was renovating his house, so I thought I’d pick up some skills and help him out. But then I signed on for a “Women Build” event, and that’s where I found my purpose!
I just kept going back, volunteering my time with Habitat. After a while, I became an official member of the Wednesday Crew, a dedicated group of volunteer builders. Some of those guys have been on the Crew for more than 15 years. And I got to be part of their group.
Applying My Purpose
I’ve been part of the Wednesday Crew for five years. These guys are like my family. And together we’re helping others get a home of their own. Volunteering for Habitat occupies a space in my life. It gives me a purpose, and I’ll keep doing it until I’m no longer able. Volunteering has changed my story.
Getting Help
Kalamazoo Valley Habitat for Humanity is part of a global, nonprofit housing organization building homes, communities and hope. It works in partnership with United Way of the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region to address a key need in our community—and open the door for people like Gretchen to volunteer and change the story.
Education
To give children the greatest chance to thrive, we invest in early childhood programs that help each child start school ready to learn. We also support programs that provide quality child care and after-school activities, get families involved in their children’s education, and help children become leaders.
Health
We are making sure people have access to physical and mental health care, and that babies are born healthy. We work with health care providers to keep costs low and make sure services are available for those with little or no health insurance.
