Kellogg Company is bringing a little something extra to this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive: an incentive to prompt more donations and benefit hungry families locally.

The National Association of Letter Carriers’ annual drive happens Saturday, May 11. It’s the biggest one-day food drive in the country. Kellogg is a national sponsor of Stamp Out Hunger, and United Way of the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region is a local partner.

Kellogg invites residents throughout the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo region to super-size their donations with this challenge: For every 10 pounds donated, Kellogg employees will assemble one “snack pack”—a package of nutritious food for local children in need. The goal is 10,000 snack packs, which are over and above what residents give to Stamp Out Hunger.

“We think this is the perfect incentive to inspire the generous people in the region,” said Stephanie Slingerland, Director of Philanthropy/Social Impact for Kellogg. “With every donation, fewer families go hungry. And the more food collected, the more snack packs we can provide for children.”

Employees will put together the snack packs at Kellogg’s facilities in Battle Creek starting on June 3, with assistance from United Way BCKR. The snack packs, along with local donations to Stamp Out Hunger will go to area pantries and programs through the Food Bank of South Central Michigan.

At the national level, Kellogg is donating 500,000 pounds of food—the equivalent of 8 million servings—to help feed people in need across the country.

Tackling hunger is the primary focus of Kellogg’s social responsibility efforts. The company addresses food security through its Breakfasts for Better Days™ platform, which is helping to create 3 billion Better Days for people and communities by the end of 2025. Since Kellogg launched Breakfasts for Better Days in 2013, the company has provided more than 3 billion servings of food to people in need. Details are available at OpenForBreakfast.com.

NALC is the long-time champion of Stamp Out Hunger, now in its 27th year. The drive gathered 71.6 million pounds of food in 2018, for a total of 1.67 billion pounds since the drive began. Letter carriers across the country began distributing Stamp Out Hunger postcards and bags to residents last week, encouraging them to bag healthy, nonperishable food items for pickup at their mailboxes on May 11.
