21-Day Equity Challenges
The 21-Day Equity Challenge is a powerful opportunity for shared learning, action, and growth. Community members are invited to develop a deeper understanding of how inequity, racism, and ableism affect our lives and our community.
These self-guided learning journeys examine the history and impact of racism and ableism, and how it has shaped people’s lives. The experience deepens understanding and helps launch what we hope will be a lifelong commitment to improving equity and inclusion.

The Racial Equity Challenge examines the history and impacts of racism and how it shapes people’s lived experiences in Battle Creek and Kalamazoo, and illustrates the inequities that are deeply rooted in our national, state, and local systems and institutions. Topics include redlining, racial socialization, segregation in Michigan, privilege, the wealth gap, and more.
The Disability Equity Challenge was developed in partnership with Disability Network Southwest Michigan and invites you to learn more about disability from a position of equality and pride. Content covers topics like the history of the disability justice movement, intersectionality, language, ableism, representation, accessibility, allyship, and disability pride.

HOW IT WORKS
• Two to three times each year, United Way facilitates a 21-Day Challenge that community members can take together, with scheduled discussions throughout. Upon joining a challenge, participants receive one email each day that features videos, articles, and podcasts on a specific topic. Upcoming planned challenges include the Disability Equity Challenge in summer 2022 and the Racial Equity Challenge in fall 2022.
• Between facilitated challenges, the content for both tracks is available at any time for community members to explore at their own pace.
• You can participate solo, or form a small group and discuss each day’s topic. We provide discussion guides and other resources to help facilitate.
• Participation is free!
