Friendly Giving Competition Aims to Change the Story

October 7, 2015

Not every clash of community rivals takes place on the athletic field. For Vicksburg and Gull Lake, a friendly challenge put up by two United Way community teams will benefit local students.

The two teams, which coordinate United Way campaign activities in their respective communities, are vying to direct an extra $1,000 in support to a local educational program, depending on which community wins. A scoring system based on dollars raised, new business donors and new individual donors will determine the winner.

“The challenge between Vicksburg and Gull Lake is a creative way to bring a little fun competition to the serious task of raising resources that help change the story locally and regionally,” said Cindy Kole, a Vicksburg resident who also co-chairs United Way’s regional campaign.

“Our school districts are old rivals from the days of the Wolverine Conference, so it’s great to bring back some of that competition for a good cause,” added Chris Tracy, a Gull Lake area resident leading the United Way effort in his community.

A community rivalry is fun and offers the chance to consider how support for United Way benefits people locally and regionally.

“We know that the issues faced in any one community don’t stop at its boundaries,” she said. “United Way focuses on effective partnerships and collective solutions that change the story for everyone across our region.”

At the same time, Kole is enjoying the town-on-town contest. “As a Vicksburg resident, I’m looking forward to celebrating our win over Gull Lake,” said Kole. “Go Bulldogs!”

Tracy had a quick response. “We’re grateful to Gull Lake donors who are inspired by this contest and ready to support United Way,” he said. “Go Blue Devils!”

The winner of the contest will be announced later this year.
