United Way Day of Caring; Changing the Story Together

Amanda's Story

A couple weeks ago, the United Way of the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region kicked off the annual campaign with a week long virtual kickoff. To finish off the action-packed week, UWBCKR Staff and a few Board Members gathered together, rolled up their sleeves, and actively engaged in helping to change the story in our region.

On Sept. 18, staff and Board Members stepped away from their daily routines to invest some sweat equity at three partner agencies: Comstock Community Center and its Comstock Learning Center division, Kalamazoo Valley Habitat For Humanity’s ReStore, and Housing Resources Inc.’s Eleanor House rapid re-housing facility.

“Changing the story in our region remains the focus of our daily work. We believe in being hands-on,” said Patty Young, events coordinator at UWBCKR.

After sharing breakfast together at Comstock Community Center, individual teams went to the different sites. Tasks included cleaning, painting, landscaping and other duties. The projects also exposed staff members to the work of the agencies and to some of the people that those agencies serve.

“It’s all about putting our time where our hearts are,” said Young. “Volunteering positively impacts the community and hopefully will inspire others to become more actively involved. Changing the story really is a collective effort.”
